The American Peter Rabbit

Peter Rabbit looks different in the U.S. than he does in England...or at least he did in 1916.

The now famous rabbit, written and drawn by Beatrix Potter, did not find a publishing home quickly or easily. And once he found that home (Frederick Werne), they dropped the ball on copyrighting him in the U.S.  So we have versions of her stories that she never illustrated and sequels and stories about Peter Rabbit and his Pa that Miss Potter never wrote.

This particular version is over 100 years old! The text is the same as the original story but the pictures are very different. The birds still "implored him to exert himself" to escape from the fence.
